Top Gun versus Independence Day
I decided to break it down and figure out which was better. I rated both movies on the following criteria:
Main character (worth 10 points)
Supporting characters (worth 10 points)
Villians (worth 10 points)
Memorable quotes (worth 5 points)
Theme song (worth 5 points)
Iconic scene (worth 5 points)
Effects (worth 10 points)
Rewatchability (worth 10 points)
Top Gun's review is today, Independence Day's is tomorrow.
Main Character
Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, USN, played by Tom Cruise
Mitchell is the headstrong, loner, exceptionally talented naval aviator (never call them pilots). He has a lady in every port, and is loyal to his RIO Goose. Maverick's father died in combat, and details are classified, so he flies with a chip on a shoulder. Like he's flying against a ghost. Maverick matures throughout the film and becomes the hero at the end. However, he left his wingmen too many times, and Charlie is quite beat for a movie starlet.
Grade: 8/10
Supporting Characters
Lieutenant Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, Lieutenant Tom "Ice Man" Kazansky, Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf
Great cast of characters. Goose is the tragic hero, Ice Man is a great rival to Maverick, and provides a ton of comic relief. Charlie sucks, you know she doesn't shave. Viper is Maverick's de facto father figure, and excels in that role.
Grade: 9/10
Villians
Unknown Soviet pilots
The audience never gets to know the pilots of the MiGs, other than their black-gloved hands on the sticks (no romo) and their intimidating visors (which probably extended the Cold War 10 years). They also bugged out mad early in the dogfight.
Grade: 5/10
Memorable Quotes
In no particular order:
"That's a negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full."
"Hey Slider... (sniff)... you stink."
"This is what I call a "target-rich environment."
"No no boys, there's 2 O's in 'Goose'"
"You'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong."
"I'll hit the brakes, he'll fly right by."
"The list is long, but distinguished." "Yeah so is my Johnson."
"That's right! Ice...man... I am dangerous."
Grade: 3.5/5
Theme Song
Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone, and Harold Faltermeyer - Top Gun Anthem
Two classic tracks. The whole soundtrack was a huge hit, and many singles did very well on the radio.
Grade: 4.5/5
Iconic scene
Beach volleyball scene (Maverick and Goose versus Ice Man and Slider)
Very romo-erotic, with Kenny Loggins blasting and sweat dripping off shirtless bodies.
Grade: 3/5
Effects
Great for the time, but the special effects' shortcomings are apparent in 2009. It seems as though some combat scenes were recycled, and there aren't too many scenes with two planes shown at once. It's unfortunate that it was produced before CGI really took over. In short, the movie has aged, but we don't watch Top Gun for the action now, do we? The sound quality is great though, especially in 5.1.
Grade: 6/10
Rewatchability
Top Gun can be watched about once every two weeks without getting sick of it. It's developed into a comedy, which is astounding, as you'll find it in the action section. The interaction between Maverick and Iceman and Maverick and Goose are very funny, as is Maverick's pursuit of Charlie. With the exception of Goose's tragic end, it's a funny movie from start to finish. This is a movie you should purchase instead of rent/stream/Netflix.
Grade: 9/10
TOTAL SCORE: 48/60 A strong performance. Can it hold up? We'll see tomorrow.
