Top Gun versus Independence Day (Continued)
Following up on the Top Gun review, here is ID4's:
Independence Day
Main Character: Captain Steven Hiller, USMC, played by Will Smith
Look up a picture of fighter pilot in the dictionary and you'll see a picture of Hiller. He's the consummate professional and a joy to fly with. He beat the hell out of ET after the parachute blindfold trick and somehow found his stripper girlfriend in the middle of post-apocalypse LA using only a spotlight. Also, he flew a 50s-era alien craft into outer space and nuked the mother ship. Mad props.
Grade: 10/10
Supporting Characters
President Thomas Whitmore, David Levinson, Julius Levinson, Russell Casse, and many more
A great supporting cast from top to bottom. The eccentic Levinsons, the tragic hero Casse (and his family), and the lead-by-example Whitmore are all icing on the cake that is Captain Hiller. Vivica Fox as Hiller's girlfiend/wife also turns in an arousing performance as a stripper.
Grade: 9/10
Villians
Aliens from parts unknown
Real bad ass guys, who travel from planet to planet, eradicate all life, suck the resources dry, then move on. No mercy to anyone, and will not go down without a fight. However, they are morons for not having Norton Antivirus.
Grade: 8/10
Memorable Quotes
In no particular order:
"Welcome to Earth"
"This could be our last night on Earth. You don't want to die a virgin, do you?"
"I coulda been at a barbeque!!!"
"That's not entirely accurate"
"Look at you! Ship all banged up? Who's the man?!?"
"I picked a hell of a day to quit drinkin'"
And the greatest speech in recent movie history, which can be found at the end of this post.
Grade: 5/5
Theme Song
None, no real soundtrack.
Grade: 0/5
Iconic scene
Final battle scene where the humans successfully penetrate the shields
Good action scene, although not one for the ages. The movie did not seem to have a standout scene, but more of a collection of really good ones.
Grade: 2/5
Effects
Awesome effects, seeing the fireball rush through the cities was crazy. The battle scenes were also great, and hold up against the test of time. The sound was also A+.
Grade: 9/10
Rewatchability
ID4 is another movie that can be watched multiple times per month, and especially around the actual Independence Day. The audience will find itself on the edge of its collective seat on every showing, even though they know what happens. Will Smith launched his career on the strength of this movie, and his wit and acting make it a wonderful experience.
Grade: 9/10
TOTAL SCORE: 52/60 It edges out Top Gun by 4 points. That seems about right. Put them side-by-side, and at gunpoint I'd take ID4. Top Gun is much better in terms of music and comedy, but ID4 is the better package.
