Old Wise Man of the Day: Ollie Reed
Today we have Oliver Reed. Ollie was last remembered for playing Proximo, the former gladiator that looks over and guides Maximus to Rome for his inevitable reunion with Commodus. Unfortunately Ollie died on the set with three weeks of filming left, and never had the chance to watch his masterful performance on the big screen. Let me tell you one thing, Ollie didn't need to see it, he already knew. I dug a little deeper in the archives and found out that Ollie may have lived his life the hardest of anyone gracing the Old Wise Man list. He self-proclaimed himself, "Mr. England" , was in the first X-rated movie and the first movie that said "Fuck". He called Jack Nicholson a "balding midget". Was stabbed in the throat during the filming of "The Musketeers", he finished the scene. Here are my four favorite quotes from him:
"I do not live in the world of sobriety."
"My only regret is that I didn't drink every pub dry and sleep with every woman on the planet."
"I like to give my inhibitions a bath now and then."
"I have made many serious statements -- I just can't remember any of them. I guess they mustn't have been very important."
This all lead up to the night he died, which also happened to be bad ass. He died of a heart attack in a bar after downing three bottles of Captain Morgan's Jamaica rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous doubles of Famous Grouse whiskey, and beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling. He probably looked similar to this.
