Today's feature: Tight Ends
Benjamin Watson, #84
Strengths: Incredible speed, impressive size
Weaknesses: Terrible hands, awful durability
Summary: Watson has been a huge disappointment since being drafted in the first round in 2004. He seems to drop a few sure first downs every game, and that's when he's on the field. Often he's not due to a continuing string of injuries. One has to wonder how much longer he'll be a part of the squad.
Grade: C-
David Thomas, #86
Strengths: Great hands, good size, good blocker
Weaknesses: Made a few crucial mental errors, injuries have been a concern.
Summary: Hopefully he can stay healthy this season, as Brady can always use a good check-down option if Welker is covered.
Grade: B-
Chris Baker, #87
Strengths: Came over from the Jets, huge, always a reliable option.
Weaknesses: TBD
Summary: I always like when we poach AFC East players, and he's been a good player for them. We'll see how many looks he gets this year.
Grade: TBD
Alex Smith, #80
Strengths: Great blocker.
Weaknesses: Not a great pass catcher.
Summary: Acquired for a 5th round pick, Smith is known for his blocking, which is always important in the Patriots offense.
Grade: TBD
Overall: The Patriots have a solid foundation of good, role-playing tight ends. The one notable exception seems to be Watson, as he is more of a pass-catching threat, despite his butterfingers. I anticipate seeing 3 of the 4 TEs make the roster, which leaves either Baker or Smith out, as Thomas has shown flashes of brilliance in the past. Time will tell.
