The Office vs. Seinfeld

The fact that the two are even in the same conversation is unreal. I started on both shows late, which is typical for me. I got PlayStation 2 years after it came out, a Razor Scooter after it was cool to have one, and just discovered the Chili Peppers and Nirvana. Basically, I'm always behind the curve.

Anyways, I got into Seinfeld during its last season, and ended up watching most/all of the episodes as reruns since then. It's easily my favorite show, and the only show that I have the actual DVDs for. Going to school with my fellow 12oz Curlers only strengthened my love for it, as they are Seinfeld aficionados in the truest sense of the word.

Recently I started watching The Office after thinking about doing it for a long time. I'm only up to halfway of Season 3, but I'm hooked already. I've actually had to pause the episode multiple times, or rewind it, because I'm laughing too hard. There is never a dull moment, and I don't think there has been a forgettable episode yet.

Sometimes I think it may go down as better than Seinfeld. Michael Scott is absolutely funnier than Jerry Seinfeld (in terms of leading characters). Seinfeld was probably driven by the quality and depth of supporting characters (which The Professor can and probably will write 5,000 words about), but The Office's supporting characters are equally as diverse. Toby is my favorite character, and his occasional encounters with Michael are hysterical. I also love Angela, and who doesn't enjoy Kevin's sardonic wit?

The Office has a long way to go, and so do I in terms of watching it. Maybe Seasons 4 and 5 will turn out to be busts (unlikely as I don't hear anyone complaining), or maybe they just won't do it for me. But if they have a few more years of success, coming close to or equaling Seinfeld's 9 year run, I think we'll have to look back on the show as one of the top shows ever.

  1. Ballsy but valid. I think people seinfeld is the choice because it's such a classic, but when Guapo breaks it down it makes a great case for the office. If i had to decide now, I would say Seinfeld. If I had to decide in 5 years, I might say different.
